Pichvnari, Greek Necropolis
Got from archaeological expedition
Size: 2.7X3 cm
Gold
A hoop of this imported jewellery is round in shape, tetrahedral in section, with granulation comprised by tightly-fitted rows of grains and twisted stripes of plant ornament placed between them. The pendant ends in sculptural representation of a hippopotamus head. His ears are pricked up, and the eyes slightly apart, both shown in relief. The prominent muzzle is covered by granulation finishing in vertical stripes surrounding it. The shapes of his mouth and back of the head are clearly outlined. Granulation technique is used along the whole line of his mandible. The temple ornaments represent one more object of the jeweller’s art of high artistic merit.
